A vertical frame can be cropped to a square, a landscape banner or a thumbnail and still have your subject in it. A landscape frame cropped to vertical takes the top of somebody’s head off.
Leave a little empty space above and below the subject while you shoot — room the crop can eat later. It costs nothing at the time and saves the whole shoot the first time you need the picture in a shape you did not plan for.
